PLOT SUMMARY
Michel is a dandy, somewhat failed painter who has never really achieved anything worthwhile. Left on the shelf as so many others of our epoch, he vegetates in Nice between his sofa and the beach. His only occupation comes down to walking the dog of his old landlady, Madame Bertrand. Michel has apparently given up all human relations, but deep down, he has never ceased to be thirsting for power, freedom, magnificent women because he is an aesthete from the very bottom of his soul. Alas, all his dreams went unheeded. But the death of an unknown, Edmond, will propel him to Tuscany with a mission: find his heir and hand his signet to him. Alternately confronting the family of the deceased, a recalcitrant priest, then thrilled by the exquisite and captivating Stefania, he eventually is appointed by the notary of the family at the head of the family empire, a contemporary art trade company. Once such inheritance accepted, in spite of the protests from Edmond’s son, he receives the visit of a mysterious evil eminence, the Prince, to whom he now owes absolute allegiance.
